The First Step to Fixing Climate Change - Next Week!
On April 6, atmospheric scientist Katharine Hayhoe will speak on how we can transform our future together, across differences
Families for a Livable Climate, Moms Clean Air Force Montana, and Mountain Mamas are proud to welcome Katharine Hayhoe to Montana (virtually) for her talk, “The First Step to Fixing Climate Change”, on Tuesday, April 6, from 12 - 1 PM MDT.
Katharine Hayhoe is an atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on understanding what climate change means for people and the places where we live. She is an endowed professor of public policy and law in the Dept. of Political Science at Texas Tech University, she hosts the PBS digital series Global Weirding, and she has been named one of TIME's 100 Most Influential People, the United Nations Champion of the Environment, and the World Evangelical Alliance’s Climate Ambassador.
Winona Bateman, mother of one small Montanan and director for Families for a Livable Climate, said, “Climate change is already impacting Montana families directly along with what we value in this place: our livelihoods, our history, and our lifestyles. We hope that people across the state will participate in this event, exploring how we can reach across differences to solve the climate crisis, and why, when we connect through our shared values, we all want that goal.”
Hayhoe’s talk will address how personal solutions to climate change are important, but they aren’t enough to fix our global problem: Our entire society is based on fossil fuels, and that’s what we have to change. And that’s why the single most important thing that any of us can do to fix climate change is to talk about it: to explain why it matters to us, to share inspiring stories of the solutions available to us today, and to advocate for change at every level: from our families and communities to our institutions and businesses.
“As parents, we understand that our children’s future depends on us taking action on climate. It's literally the air they breathe.” said Michelle Uberuaga, with Moms Clean Air Force in Livingston, and mom to three little Montanans.
Becky Edwards, executive director of the Mountain Mamas remarked, “Mountain Mamas across the state live, work, and raise our families here because of our exceptional quality of life and access to our shared public lands. Climate change is very real and the impacts of which reverberate through our communities with more intense and prolonged fire seasons, catastrophic rain events, and so much more. Each of us has the power and ability to create change, and we are proud to support events like this to share information and women like Katharine who are turning good intentions into great actions.
The event will be co-moderated by Winona Bateman, director, Families for a Livable Climate, and Dr. Cathy Whitlock, Regents Emerita Professor in Earth Sciences at Montana State University, a Fellow of the Montana Institute on Ecosystems, and co-author of the Montana Climate Assessment.
